Recently, I traveled to Japan to attend a Scar Tissue Release seminar. The instructor was Dr. Shimizu from the LA Galaxy. LA Galaxy is a professional soccer team in the United States. Dr. Shimizu graduated from a chiropractic university in the U.S. and has worked as a chiropractor for LA Galaxy for about 20 years.

When he returned to Japan and offered this seminar, I traveled from Bangkok to Tokyo to participate. So, what exactly is scar tissue release?

Scar tissue mainly refers to lump-like tissue that forms at the attachment points between muscles and bones or on top of muscles. When this tissue hardens, it gradually becomes calcified and can eventually turn into bone spurs or bone. Once it becomes bone, it can be confirmed by X-ray and is difficult to remove with manual therapy. However, at earlier stages, scar tissue can be removed through hands-on techniques. This seminar focused on both the theory and methods for removing scar tissue.

In typical massage or treatments, the main focus is usually on muscles. For conditions such as shoulder or lower back pain, tight or stiff muscles are treated with electrical therapy, manual massage, or acupuncture. In contrast, scar tissue release targets hard scar tissue or calcified tissue attached to the bone and releases tissue adhesions.

By removing this tissue, joint range of motion improves, chronic inflammation can be reduced, and posture can also change. When scar tissue exists in one joint, it not only causes pain in that joint but can also place extra stress on other joints, leading to pain elsewhere.

With conventional treatments, muscles are loosened and patients feel better after treatment, but symptoms often return quickly. Scar tissue release separates adhesions at the attachment points to the bone, resulting in longer-lasting relief. Technically, this treatment is quite difficult and may involve some pain, but the therapeutic effects are significant. Going forward, I hope to teach this technique to our Thai staff and offer it to our patients.
