If you find that you often have a squeezing painful tension in your head or a migraine, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten people suffer from headaches. While most headaches are an occasional occurrence that a simple paracetamol tablet can fix, for some it may present as throbbing and debilitating, lasting for days.
Though it may seem strange to some, we have quite a number of patients visit our clinic seeking for a migraine treatment because they suffer from prolonged or chronic headaches. Many of our patients have already checked with an MRI at the hospital, but sometimes it is still concluded that there is nothing wrong. The doctors prescribe medicine to reduce pain and they feel better… but in a while the pain comes back, but it’s even worse.
What do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you simply grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down and rest for a while? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative. Headaches have many causes, or triggers. These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.).
How Headache and Migraine Treatments Work
In many cases, headaches and migraines are caused by stiffness of shoulder and neck muscle due to bad posture. Treatment of neck and shoulder may sometimes be effective but the root cause is often bad posture. Many clinics may treat the neck and shoulders, but this is often a temporary solution – giving temporary relief, where a patient ends up having to come back multiple times for a “touch-up”.
While therapy for the neck and shoulders are also important, it is fixing the root cause, posture, that will prevent further complications down the line. Our clinic combines all these – treatment of the neck, shoulders, and posture – in a physical therapy session called a migraine treatment.
Why Bad Posture Causes Headaches
Nerve irritation along the spine is what physical therapists believed which creates chemical imbalances in the brain and number one cause of migraines. For this kind of health problem, therapists will try to align the vertebrae to try to alleviate any nerve irritation. As well, physical therapy uses the spinal alignment and proper placement as a theory to keep the body balanced and in proper working order.
Physical therapy is also useful with tension headaches by relieving pressure in the upper part of the spine and neck that can be caused by misalignment. Out of placed vertebrae would lead to tension build up through the neck and shoulder. That’s why getting your spine adjusted and placed properly can relieve the pressure to this area and headaches as well.
Here’s a great video by the Motivational Doc on YouTube that explains a little further:
To treat this kind chronic condition, visiting a therapist is essential; from a range of one visit for a simple misalignment, to multiple visits for a better result – you should get a migraine treatment. There would be provided sessions for immediate relief from the symptoms associated with consistent stretching, good spine health, and headaches but proper posture are required for permanent relief.
